Thank you for this article. I just realized that the program I am in is NOT accredited. I can't believe that I missed this. You are absolutely right about the non accredited schools not letting you know this as part of their orientation package or anywhere in the application process. I feel like my school has been just taking my money, thankfully I am planning on going to grad school; I will check to make sure they are NAAB accredited.

Great series! Having just completed the task of obtaining my license in TN, I agree with your points of starting early and getting it done.
I am an anomaly when it comes to time taken from graduation to licensed status: 2 1/2 years. This was accomplished thanks to 1: taking a year off after my 4th year in school to work for a firm (which counted towards IDP) and 2:TN offering concurrent testing. However, the other interns in the office that are actively testing have all been here one to three years longer than I have. They will most likely finish up in 2010. Plus, we have a few that have not begun to test due to various reasons of their own. The longer time frames cited at stairwaytoarchitecture.com do not seem that out of line to me.

James -- Your site is terrific. The stats in my charts include only those who have become licensed, no-one else. The average in both NY State and Nebraska in 2009 for candidates who became licensed in that year was 11 years since graduation. I'm expecting data from Oregon shortly. NCARB provides only 'surveys' and no raw data.

Matt,

I believe that those numbers are strongly swayed by the percentage of interns in our profession that practice architecture for thirty years, but never earn their license. I work in an office of 40 people and in the last year 6 people have earned their license, five of those are four year interns. I believe that he process can be sped up by clarifying the process and self determination.

Great website by the way! I'll add it to my archives.

FYI, as best as I can determine, Architecture Internship averages 11 years currently. Charts are posted at stairwaytoarchitecture.com
