NCARB screwed up my transcripts when they entered them into their system resulting in a multi-month delay in getting registered to take the ARE’s. Then I was scheduled to take one in a week, but found out the practice software only works on outdated (non-64 bit) computers. This is so stupid I can hardly believe it is true. Please call them and demand that they stop sucking: 202-783-6500. Better yet call newspapers or congressmen or investigative reporters. Seriously. I am. The only reason these idiots are getting away with being inept is that we haven’t made a big enough fuss yet.

This is really upsetting, but thanks for posting it. I agree with aRCHITECTs that it’s particularly ludicrous given the recent economic downturns, job lay-offs, and student loan burdens that architects and aspiring architects have to face!

I cannot believe the cost of an exam – i took my last exam in 2009 and it was $95. Now it is over $200. And…..i went to download the practive exams and my vista 64 bit nor my windows 7 systems cannot surrort the great and mighty NCARB’s system! WTF! Does NCARB think any student in 2011 is using a computer from the ’90s? Todays kids are using windows 7….at least. I sure am glad NCARB is using the outragous fees wisely – NOT! Upgrade your frigging systems!

I found the article above to be very informative while also shocking. The salary statistics are especially troubling given that I would think there are very few architects since 2009 whose salary has not actually decreased significantly in the last few years. As soon as updated information is available please post that as it will be interesting to see if salaries are still increasing by double digit percentages!

I dropped NCARB in 2007 after being a member since 1867, thats 40 years. Something was terribly wrong with NCARB as their fees kept rising far beyond inflation index. After reading this blog, I now know wny they are in such bad shape, and have done so little for their members. They could not manage a tree farm

I wonder what the fees would look like if, when you paid to take an exam, you were given unlimited re-tests at no additional cost…

As a 20 year experienced architect I too am appalled at all of this. The problem with not paying your dues is that if want to gain reciprocity in another state you have to pay all back dues – I just had to write a check for $1600 (!!!) to pay for back dues to 2003 in order to get my certificate transfered to PA. The cost for that emailed transfer? An outrageous $400. The cost of the PA license? $30. AIA asks ‘what has AIA done for me lately’ in their email blasts. I plan to ask them about this extortionary proceedure.
The Gensler designed HQ and $200K salaries are the last straws.

I really can’t believe there’s no comments on this post yet. I, among my many architect friends, have a deep loathing for NCARB and their fees. I’m going to spread this post to high heaven. We need to do something about this fiasco.
